How much data do you need on a trip?

Maps, video calls, cloud photo backup and streaming use very different amounts of data. Your usual phone usage is a better starting point than a generic daily estimate, especially if you keep automatic backups enabled.

Before you go

Review your phone’s data usage settings, download offline maps on Wi-Fi and choose a plan with a clear total allowance and validity. Add top-ups only if your provider actually offers them.

  • Check that every country on your trip appears in the coverage list.
  • Read the plan validity and the event that starts its clock.
  • Treat local-currency displays as estimates; the checkout USD amount is the amount charged.

If the instructions don’t match your phone

Inventory, coverage and activation rules can change. Read the terms attached to the exact package at checkout, and save a copy for your trip.
